I was watching Snakes in the Eagles Shadow (yea some name eh) and I came up with an idea for DOA while also thinking of Mortal Kombat at the same time.

Sure in DOA tournament, weapons are forbidden.
To make DOA gameplay jump into something bigger like other games does.
Examples:
*Devil May Cry gameplay jumped crazily to Bayonetta Style
*Uncharted 1 gameplay jumped bigger to Uncharted 2 style.
*The massize scale gameplay of Unreal Tournament to Unreal Tournament 2003, again to Unreal Tournament 2004 and now Unreal Tournament 3.



Well my point is, what if we allow DOA Characters to use their unique weapon briefly or a weapon when fighting? It would be like a defense mechanism.

Take Mortal Kombat 3D for an example, how you can switch to the character's unique weapon and fight with it.

Imagine DOA, how you can pull off a move ending with the character striking with his/her own unique weapon?

Ryu- Dragon Sword
Kasumi- Tanto sword (Versus Omnibus was good at weapon names:/)
Ayane- Genra's double edged sword
Jan Lee- nunchunks
Kokoro- tai chi jian
Bass- chains
Bayman- Assassin knife
Christie- short blade
Eliot- Boardsword
Hayate- Katana
Gen Fu- Boardsword
Hitomi- staff
Leon- assassin knife
La Mariposa-
Tina- Club/Pipe
Zack- Tonfas


The thing is, you won't be able to switch to weapons according though when you perform combo, the last button sequence will trigger the character to strike with his/her weapon.

Imagine me doing X+X+X+B (X for Kick and B for Punch). Kasumi will do multiple kicks 3 times and the last button which is B (supposed to be Punch), Kasumi will just trigger her tanto short sword attack.

Or imagine trying to perform Ryu's new Zukaku Ransh- instead of doing the izuna combo with his bare hands, he can just do it with his sword.

Weapon attacks will not cause more damage though they are just for show offs. If weapons can be triggered with long combos of course they will do more than a normal damage since "long combo" sequences are determined to do higher damages.


Then again I'm thinking of weapon pick ups.
I remember a friend of mine telling me about Soul Calibur how you can use weapons. The way he worded he sounds like you can pick up weapon in the arena:/
Imagine the DOA Environmental stages, if your opponent knocks you to a wall and you break through it and landed on top of a weapon. You can just pick up the weapon and fight with it. Your opponent would just have to give you multiple strikes or critical hits to knock you off holding that weapon.

Thus this will cause DOA to have blood, although it necessarily doesn't require blood since Soul Calibur doesn't contain blood.

"DOA 5 just got deadly"

Question:
Should DOA gameplay improve by introducing character's unique weapons?

Choices:
Yes. This is Next Gen and games needs to evolve
No. Weapons will ruin the essence of DOA fighting system
Make it limited and seperate like Soul Calibur 4's Standard and Special mode.

 

I don't know, this sounds too much like Soul Calibur to me. And yes, I am an expert on weapons. ^^

no it's not too much like Soul Calibur because I said from start that Mortal Kombat too uses weapon switching.
What I'm trying to say is, characters cannot specifically use weapon anytime, the weapon is just incorporated into their novelist or combos.

<--+B+A+B= Jan Lee can do a Nunchunk strike.

or remember the charging move attacks when you hold down a button with direction movement? what if Ryu does the charging stance and uses his sword to strike instead of both palms?


I mean fighting games need to evolve if a new sequel appears.
I don't know much about Street Fighter 4 but I do know they introduced a new super attack system, if the opponent is low on health he can trigger this mode and he does bigger damage and super attack.
That feature isn't new, but it's nice to see it in SF.



You can tell the big gameplay jump for Soul Calibur 4.
*It introduces costume destruction (yes it's not new but it's awesome to see it come back in this generation and in HD and for SC series)
*Soul Crush
*Soul Finishers
*Soul tweaks (even though it makes SC4 look like an RPG game:/)



This is why this applies to DOA and why it needs to introduce new elements for gameplay.

*Costume damage? (SC4)
*Character skin damages? (MK Alliance)
*Weapon attacks? (MK A/D)
*Partner assist? (Marvel vs Capcom)
*QTE? (MK vs DC)

Hmmm....

How about customization for characters, like Soul Calibur 4? The only difference being your only changing the character's looks and not the stats. It may not be new, but I'm sure fans will have fun with this feature.

that's already discussed (or being discussed) in another topic about customization in DOA.


Unless what we could say is add a special gameplay mode that just allows characters to use their specific unique weapons.
Other gameplay modes such as survival, team, story will forbid weapons.

It would be like Soul Calibur 4's online mode whereas you have special mode for using your customizable character and standard mode for using regular characters.

And DOA seriously needs new gameplay modes.

Considering mortal kombat is dead and the last attempt was a street fighter style "MK vs.." game its NOT a good idea for DOA to copy MK!

adding weapons? you mean turn a perfectly good fighting game into Sould calibur? NO bad idea!

hows this for an idea: Why not have a campaign mode like tekken 6 did? it could be like a mini code chronos!

I don't think it would be DOA any more if it uses weapons ,
and why would TN start copying soul calibur .
soul calibure was made to be a weapon based game where you calculate the range of weapons and other stuff which fight games fans may not like to use or have to use in the gameplay of DOA.
but if you really need to see weapons in the game, you may want to suggest an extra gameplay mode that provides some short ninja gaiden-like experience ( something like what the latest tekken used) but I really don't advise that for DOA.
besides PS3 owners would expect the next DOA game to provide a reflection of the experiece they missed on the XBOX. and it's the first release of the game on the PS3 so why try something new that MAY lessen the sales and the fans of the game.
either way if TN decides to use weapons they should know that this decision will effect the entire series and future releases not just the release they might wish to change.

No you don't understand, DOA using weapons doesn't necessarily need to be like Soul Calibur 4.

This is what I meant. I don't mean characters specifically use weapons while they fight from start to finish. They just use weapon to add to their combo strings. If you watch the video above, or have played Mortal Kombat 3D games, you'll notice if you input longer combos, character will perform legs, punches, uppercut and additionally weapons to the combo sequence. eg "Leg+Leg+Swipe Kick+Weapon*+Punch+Uppercut".

Imagine if Ryu does punch+punch+sword attack+kick+punch.


Trust me, we are in next gen and fighting games need to evolve, I was deeply disappointed with DOA4 and one of them been the cliche uses of 6th gen DOA style. No new gameplay modes, same gameplay from previous DOA, same menu design, etc etc! Nothing is practically new to the game except for revamp moves, new characters and stages which you should expect from new release fighting games (online doesn't count since DOAU2 already have this).
I haven't played SF4 yet but I do know they added some sort of new gaming system to it, use of some cell shaded shadow attacks (the mark that appears in the trailer too) and use of near death advantage meaning if a player is about to dead he'll gain some damaging move advantages.

Soul Calibur 4, try and count all the new things added to the game: costume break, Soul equipments/tweaking, soul crush and soul finisher.

If DOA5 comes out what new feature will it have apart from having a Code Cronus gameplay mode (Tekken Force Mode) with use of weapon. DOA5 will be exactly the same like the rest of DOA with no new added feature just few new characters and stages.


This is why I'm saying DOA5 will need a new gameplay feature even though the feature isn't weapon additions, it still needs new gameplay features.
