I love Ninja Gaiden 2, and would like to check out more of Itagaki's work. But it is confusing since there is so many DOA games, which is the essential in the series?
My opinion is DOA Xtreme 2, Cause it's hard but not impossible like 1+2 Ultimate, 3 or 4. DOA 1, 2 and 2 Hardcore were pretty fun, easily enough to beat, but that's before they went psycho at Tecmo. It's damn near impossible to unlock everything from ultimate and up you have to have a save for DOA 3 to unlock a 2 Ultimate character, and you have to unlock everything on 2 U to unlock all the costumes on 3. DOAX2 you can use the loop they created to achieve the unlockables on your Xbox 360. Only DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball is unplayable on the 360. And 2 kicks it's hind end off the shelf. Well that's my recommendation. PS don't take the movie as storyline cause in 1+2 U it makes appear that Kasumi's mother was raped by Raidou and the offspring is Ayane. In the movie, Ayane is in love with Hayate (technically her half brother). Sorry to confused you but that's about as far as I got in the series before X2 came out. But they are all fun games.
I would recommend DOA2 Ultimate because you can find it new for under $19 and if you have a XBOX 360 I would pick up DOA3,DOA4,& DOAX2. If you have a PS2 I would hunt down the PS1 Version of Dead Or Alive and DOA2 Hardcore.
