Pick the one that matters to you the most. Remember that the $500 unit will no longer be available in the US.

Ok, let me explain the reason why I made this thread and hopefully it will get some of you to pick one that matters to you. There are analysts that say that Sony needs to cut the price of the PS3 some time soon. Many of them are saying that there needs to be a $100 price cut despite the fact that there was already a $500 dollar PS3 which Sony discontinued in the US. Others are saying that a $100 price cut is not enough and that they may need to drop down to 360 Elite or Premium prices before things start to look up. Then there are analysts that say that it is just fine at the price it is right now and that only better games will improve its position.
I posted this thread to see which analyst's opinion is leaning in the right direction also to so see how many people are waiting for the system to reach casual prices before they decide to purchase. I put in a choice for those who already have one and one those of you who will never buy one. So you don't have to post but please pick one of the above. |

I just bought one! I was basically waiting for games to come out... I guess I'll have to keep on waiting though...
Have downloaded demos, but not bought any games as of yet. First game will be NGS Plusses: Bluray sure is pretty... I'm a video snob and love the high def (720p, 1080i), Thank the stars for Netflix! (poor video snob - have to live with component video for now, no HDMI yet) Media player in PS3 is better than Xbox360. Not by much though Free wireless controller Support for Linux I can use my PS2 component cables Sony online, play is free? Minuses: Where the F are the games? Sony online sucks rocks - UI experience is slow, crappy compared to XB Live (Silver) Sony online has no content PS2 games look like crap, even with the 1.8.1 updater - I'm not sure why this is, as it's supposed to be upscaling and the initial issues were supposed to be fixed Personally, I think the reasons people are not buying PS3 are: 1: Wii selling like hotcakes 2: No games for PS3 PS: no regrets buying a PS3 a) Playing Rachel in HD is worth it b) Bluray keeps me happy c) Games will eventually come out for PS3 In the meantime, I've got TombRaider to hold me over. |

Sony is going all out this fall which is part of the reason most of the good titles are being bunched up on both systems at the end of summer and early fall and Sony is almost taking a Nintendo, of the past, like approach this time around. Microsoft and Sony are going to try and really battle it out this year. Sony's first and second party looks very strong this year with their two biggest games being Heavenly Sword (something I would play if I purchase the system...if the combat is good.) and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (going to be big but I don't really care for it.) Lair is a maybe type game.
As for Wii's selling like hot cakes. They are not really selling to all of the people who have owned home consoles last gen. Nintendo right now is doing something very different and I'm not talking about the controls. They have taken the concept of the Gameboy and NDS and turned it into a home console. They are growing the industry. As long as developers try to come up with really interesting games instead of making cheap cash-ins the industry will continue to be healthy through out the this generation if not and there are too many "me too" games on the Wii publishers could ruin the best chance they had of growing the industry past the 150-170 million home consoles sold last generation and possibly the industry as a whole. The Wii in my opinion doesn't isn't a big threat to the other two consoles as long as the Sony and Microsoft make sure that the systems offer the best experience possible to it users and get the price down as quickly as possible. That includes SD users as well. People may need HDTVs to get the best visual experience out of these systems but shouldn't feel like they need an HDTV to enjoy them. This message has been edited. I kinda agree with you, but also I know a lot of people that bought PS1, PS2 in the past, that ended up buying a Wii instead of a PS3. They're kinda happy with what they got, and so the PS3 has been temporarily pushed out of their minds. I betcha Sony thinks Wii is a threat - their sales are slumped, and they have recent memories of getting their asses handed to them in the DS vs. PSP war. I do hope the games come out - but unfortunately the ones you mentioned don't really excite me that much... At least on the Xbox side there's Halo 3 to look forward to... |

The PSP vs. DS ended up being the harbinger of this generation. The PSP is a nice well built machine that can do alot of things but the most important thing was games and DS has it beat by a mile as far as quality goes IMO. (I still have one and admit that I'm using it to play PS1 games. The last game I purchased for the system was Tokobot and it might end up being the last game I purchase for the system.) Price was also a huge factor. Now that it is 170 dollars it is selling better but I still don't see any games on the horizon that I want for it.
The simplicity of the DS is it's biggest strength. Ever since console controllers moved past two buttons, games have gotten harder for new comers to get into. Many of the best games have very complicated controls compared to how things were in the 8bit generation. For all of these years Nintendo has been getting things wrong with their controller especially the last two generations. The Gameboy, DS and Wii make it extremely simple for new comers to start playing and I'm not talking about young people either. I'm talking about your dad, your mom, and your grandmother, people who likely have trouble using their computers, wanting to play and actually being able to play. This is good for the industry. Nintendo's only mistake was bowing out of the power race. This is what will allow the PS3 to become a great competitor in the future when the price has gone down and everybody has purchased their HDTV. Nintendo may release another Wii in next two years but I expect it to only match the other two in power. Nintendo will make money on the hardware from day 1 no doubt about it.
