This was obviously before the announcement. Though I am pretty sure that almost all the press knew about it way ahead of time.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Introduces Metal Gear Solid(R)4: Guns of
The Patriots PS3 Bundle Available in Late Q2 2008 in North America

Company Also Announces Limited-Edition God of War(R) PSP(R) Entertainment Pack
and April Availability of DUALSHOCK(R)3 Wireless Controller for North America

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual retail and
publisher conference Destination PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment
America (SCEA) announced details of upcoming PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) and
PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) (PSP-2000) hardware bundles with two of the
most highly anticipated 2008 titles. The company also announced the April
2008 availability of DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controller in North America.

To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear
Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3
bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear
Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499
(MSRP).

SCEA also announced the June 2008 availability of the limited-edition God
of War(R) PSP Entertainment Pack for $199.99 (MSRP). The God of War
Entertainment Pack will include a "Deep Red" PSP with God of War himself,
Kratos, silk-screened on the back of the unit, a copy of the highly
anticipated upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus game for PSP, the hit
comedy movie from Columbia Pictures, "Superbad(TM)," on UMD(TM) (Universal
Media Disc), and a PLAYSTATION(R)Network voucher to download Syphon Filter(R):
Combat Ops from PLAYSTATION(R)Store. The stand-alone version of God of War:
Chains of Olympus launches on March 4, 2008.

"Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our
hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great
opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to
incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America
and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal
way to offer that continued value to our consumers," said Jack Tretton,
president and CEO, SCEA. "With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar
software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the
incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall."

SCEA will introduce the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for the first time
in North America in April 2008 for $54.95 (MSRP). DUALSHOCK 3, which
incorporates both rumble and motion sensing SIXAXIS(TM) technologies,
maintains the award-winning design and precise, responsive features of
PlayStation controllers. The added rumble feature, combined with the SIXAXIS
system, enhances the gamer experience with more interactive, intuitive and
immersive game play experience and will work with more than 100 current PS3
titles.

In additional news coming from Destination PlayStation, SCEA announced
Metal Gear Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots will be available in North America
in late Q2 2008. A Metal Gear Online "Starter Pack" will also be launched to
support online game play. Gamers can select a single player experience or take
the action online with up to 16 players and battle it out using the latest
weapons and stealth techniques. For those eager to take on Solid Snake's
nemesis, Liquid Ocelot, a nationwide pre-sell promotion will enable gamers to
pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and be guaranteed access to
a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.

I'll be abandoning this thread soon to post a new one but since interesting news items have been scarce lately I'm not in a big rush to do so.

I thought you would have created a new thread when GDC hit this year. Maybe you can create a new one when the next big Trade Show hits.

As always, thanks for the news. Wink

Bonus Round:GTA

I will save the issue of controversy for the Mass thread I posted last week.( I really think some of you guys should care about things like that especially if you're a Ninja Gaiden fan.) Based on sales of the previous game last generation this game stands a good chance of being bigger than MGS4, Gears, and Madden. This game will likely be the most important release in the industry this year.*

With this game believed to be a console seller you can understand why many in the industry are excited for this game's release. Larger installed base could equal better software sales all around which is not always true but many have bet on this in the past with the PS2. I can't wait to see what impact this installment has on the industry.

One thing that I found interesting in the video was that Assassins Creed sold seven million copies despite being considered an average game in reviews. Though I'm sure the Christmas rush had a little bit to do with it I would say this game owes a lot to having a great advertising campaign to go along with great pr (Having an attractive female producer did wonders for this game as well) because reviews of the game certainly didn't help much.

I have a feeling when the NPD numbers come out next month Army of Two will reap the benefits of a great advertising campaign as well.

*The previous installment of the Metal Gear serious wasn't as well received in the west the previous version but with the changes made to some of the gameplay mechanics(the changes made to shooting in this game might end up being the clincher for this game.) this time it could end up turning the tide for this system in the US but at the same time looks to contain some elements that the mainstream might shy away from.

As long as Kojima productions doesn't go overboard with the story and some of the weirdness(by American standards)like they did in MGS2 they might have a mega hit(larger than all previous installments.) in the US that is worthy of all the hype but the game still remains a maybe for the year.

Resident Evil 5 footage.
Rough and incomplete Translation stolen from Neogaf.

quote:
"Ever since the dawn of time,
the most primordial human emotion has been...
FEAR"

The DVD starts with footage of the original RE, where the original nightmare started as Chris and Jill try to escape the mansion.
In RE2, the battle against Umbrella unfolded as Raccoon City died.
In 3, an incessant hunter pursued Jill Valentine.
In the deserted island of Rockfort, more mysteries unfolded in CODE: Veronica.
Convict Billy Coen was an unexpected ally in Zero.
And in a village infected with madness, Leon rescued the president's daughter in 4...

The series was introduced in 1996 and broke sales records.

Now a new game is coming... Biohazard 5.

Takeuchi Interview (very rough/basic translation)

Footage of the devs examining Chris' Biohazard 5 character model on a PC. The original Biohazard was developed on older hardware, but in 5, the hardware allows for the character models to be adapted to various situations.

There were various teams that could make the game at the beginning.
Africa confirmed - Or, at the very least, the village is modeled after an African village
Sunlight will be a focus of the game to achieve a new kind of feel not done before.

Chris at first can walk around the village with no one attacking him, but he sees two people attacking another and dragging the guy into the room. Chris follows in, and the action starts after the mutation.

More footage of Chris fighting the ganados. So far, it's very similar to RE4.

5's System
Shinji Mikami's Biohazard 4 is the base for the system, with evolutions and improvements planned.

Chris Redfield
Takeuchi was a staff member of the original Biohazard, of which Chris was a star of. 5 takes place 10 years after the original RE, and Chris has a new mission.

Weapon Variation
Chris is up against a huge number of enemies. The game will have variation in weapons including series classics like the Handgun and Shotgun and such. The footage shows the developers examining a handgun character model.

Fight Elements
The game will make use of the action buttons (QTEs) from Biohazard 4 once again.

Message to the Fans
Fans have eagerly awaited prior titles and now await Biohazard 5. Capcom's working hard on the game's unexpected graphics, system and story. The Biohazard series has taken on various forms in its history. Presently a CG movie is also in works (Biohazard Degeneration) and that will be shown as well. There is a lot to look forward to in the Biohazard world this year. We will delve down into the story and characters of the Biohazard series, and thus this year will be filled with Biohazard. Please look forward to more information on the title this year.

Final World from Mr. Takeuchi

Fixing Online Gaming Idiocy
One of the reasons I stopped playing Counter Strike(PC) years ago was because I got tired of dealing with online bigotry that seemed pervasive in that game. I managed to get thorough one year of Return to Castle Wolfenstien with only one instance of that. I actually like play against other people but I find that every time I go online now, I mute the mic and turn the voice volume down.

Bonus Round: GTA part 3

I actually hated GTA3 because of the shooting controls. Everything else seemed fine other than the tone but one of the most important things you need to be able to do in GTA is shoot people and this aspect totally sucked and I believe that clones like Saints Row and Crackdown the shooting part down right and if GTA4 has shooting controls like those two games I believe it will have fixed its biggest flaw.

12pages of artwork and screenshots.

GEARS 2 ARTICLE, 12 PAGES

New Faces (character art for each):

Quote:
Tai Kaliso: While Cole and Baird are still a big part of the story, they won't be attached to Delta Squad as the new game opens. The reunion with those popular characters will have some lead up first, and until then, you'll be meeting some new personalities. The most memorable of these new additions may be Tai, a spiritual and meditative warrior from a tradition of honor-bound fighters. This familiar archetype should add a fun and perhaps mystical dynamic to the squad.

Chairman Prescott: Lots of gamers found themselves wondering if Marcus' domineering superior officer was the head of the human government. It turns out that Hoffman is only second in command. Above him stands the Chairman, an almost dictatorial military leader who nonetheless has made the hard choices necessary to keep humanity alive through decades of warfare. As Gears 2 opens, this leader of the COG forces will deliver a speech to the troops before sending them reeling into the suicidal mission ahead.

Dizzy: In the seemingly unending struggle with the Locust Horde, the military forces of the COG have taken massive casualties. Somewhere along the way, Operation Lifeboat was enacted to bring in some fresh blood. Under this new act, the Coalition government will rescue a Stranded family and bring them into the relative story of a COG-protected zone. In return, the able-bodied men of that family join up and contribute their skills to the war effort. Such is the case with hardened soldier Dizzy, a new character who drives the massive Derrick on which Delta Squad ascends into the mountains. With a trademark drawl and an insistence on calling his truck "Betty", he's a colorful new addition to the cast.

Maria Santiago: When Emergence Day struck, Dom's wife Maria became a victim as surely as if she had died in that first attack. On that day, her children were killed. Unable to deal with the shock and loss, Maria lost herself in the ruins of civilization. For Dominic, who joined the COG to protect his family, no priority is higher than to retrieve his lost love - his very personal quest to find her is a major part of the story that unfolds in Gears 2.

Gears of War 2 begins six months after the last thing you do at the end of part one.

Quote:
"We want to fulfill the promise - it is a war. It's more than just these four guys. The first game felt very personal, and in a lot of ways that was good," senior producer Rod Fergusson tells us. However, it's clear from our time with the team that Gears 2 will shoot for a much larger conflict. "In order to save jacinto, they have no choice but to take the war to the Locust," Fergusson continues. "They're going to push back and go underground, and bring the battle to them."

Lots of talk about the new Unreal tech. GI says the story and gameplay are a pretty major leap forward from the original game, but an equally large step is being made in the behind-the-scenes tech. Gears 2 is set to impress just like Gears 1 did. New character lighting, it's a step away from realistic lighting and towards cinematic lighting. New version of Unreal 3 constantly shifts the lighting technique in order to make a character stand out in the environment. Ambient occlusion is another tech being used. Unreal's new ability to render huge numbers of individual creatures at the same time... hundereds of Locust troops, each moving independently and as unique individuals. Awesome water effects, soft body physics.

Most multiplayer details are under wraps. There is a remake of Gridlock. Step up in technology is obvious. "We hear hints of all sorts of new multiplayer features, from dramatically expanded co-op modes to multiplayer content that takes advantage of Unreal's new ability to deliver huge numbers of the Locust horde at one time, but confirmed details will have to wait until a later date."

"Gameplay of Gears 2 will appear mostly familiar to fans, with a few small variations. The core cover/shoot mechanics remain largely intact, but the use of cover has been carefully retouched so it will be harder to get hit while protected, as the character will rest a little further back from the corners. Active reloads won't be dramatically altered, particularly with the returning weapons. However, some of the new arsenal may vary the way in whihc active reloads are used. New chainsaw duels expand that gruesome combat mechanic to deliver even more excitement. Boss battles return, but a big push is geared towards refining them, making them more fun and epic in scale.

"We have creatures that make the Brumak look like a baby panda bear." -Cliff Bleszinski

Drop in and drop out co-op.

Multiple save files to maintain the integrity of each playthrough without abandoning your other attempts.

Gears 2 will have different difficulty settings for each player in co-op. One person can play on Hardcore, one on Casual, for instance. When you are together, the game will understand what that means, and when you split up, you will have individual experiences. Details on how this works exactly are under wraps.

A fourth difficulty is being added for the most casual gamers. Harder difficulty settings will remain "truly devastating." They say Casual in the first game wasn't casual enough. This way everyone who wants to pick up the controller will be embraced.

COG Centaur tank. Takes the best parts of a monster truck and a military tank and combines them. There's a dedicated level where you'll pilot one.

"We were shown a vast underground cave level wherin Marcus and his companions will take the fight to the Locust. Unlike the sometimes cramped and and linear subterranean paths from the first game, the cavern complex is vast and breathtaking. Branching levels and open spaces give players true tactical choices as they decide which way to tackle an assault. Whatever path you choose, bio-luminescent plants light light the faces of the new Locust Kantus enemies. These monk-like devils hum low and droning chants that can be focused into sonic attacks against you. They wield weapons like the new Gorgon burst pistol and poison grenades, both of which can become part of your arsenal if you play your cards right. However, the Kantus' true danger lies in their ability to revive their fallen bretheren from afar. Where before you could rest easy after taking down an enemy soldier, now there is the constant danger of them rising back up to continue to fight. The only alternative is to brave the hail of gunfire to break through enemy ranks and kill the Kantus sulking in the rear. Along the way, you may not have access to stable cover anymore, so you'll have to make do with the moving kind. Massive Locust rock worms will emerge from the cavern walls during battle, guided by the Kantus' chanting. Luckily, the creatures are so large you can hide behind them as they sliter about, and you too will be able to guide them to an advantageous firing position."

The team at Epic is well aware that many players out there hunger for a deeper and more involved storytelling experience. Lots of emotion this time. Joshua Ortega has been brought on, he is a novelist / comic writer. Really sounds like they are working a lot on the story. Sense of depth with the characters. A "darker and more heartfelt narrative." "THE STAKES ARE RAISED. THIS IS HUMANITY'S LAST STAND. EVERYTHING IS AT RISK. NOTHING IS SAFE." -Joshua Ortega

Voice actors returning include John DiMaggio as Marcus Fenix, and Carlos Ferro as Dominic Santiago. They will be recording the dialogue side by side, more authentic this way.

Forced walking scenes that masked loading time have been replaced with a dynamic conversation camera system - focused facial close ups, shifting dramatic angles, but the player is still in control. There is a "SHUT UP" button that will let you have Marcus end the conversation early and get back to the action.

"There's a certain percentage of the audience that wants to skip all that, and they just want to shoot some s---, and we're more than willing to cater to that." -Cliff Bleszinski

Many Achievements will be able to be earned in Single or Multiplayer. You can check for instance, if you need 1,000 headshots, you can look at your progress in the journal.

Your floating robot has a video screen now, so Anya can give you mission updates face to face.

-----------------------------------------------
There are also rumors that Microsoft and Sony will be releasing their own version of the Wiimote(I know that is not the name but I like it better.). Eh...we'll see how this works out in the end.
------------------------------------------------

AV Watch has an interview with SCE engineers about 2.20.
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...0403/rt057.htm

quote:
* Apparently movie studios are satisfied with BD-Live functions in PS3. Its processing speed / graphics rendering is much faster than dedicated players and the performance gap won't get narrower soon. Even among current BD-Java titles, some are doing performance profiling in a loading screen and show richer effects on PS3. Such differentiation by player performance may happen for BD-Live too. It is not something special only for PS3, it's in the spec of the BD format.

* 2.20 has neither Managed Copy (w/ transcoding) nor Portable Copy (w/o transcoding,
demoed at CES) implemented.

* In-game XMB is one of the features discussed at SCE, but they can't comment on the date and so on yet. Though some of the XMB functions are already available in-game by an update, not many games support them yet.

* To licensee developers, it was announced that 2.20 could reduce system memory resource usage a lot.

* The web browser runs faster and has better streaming support than before. Though they can't comment on which particular service they'll support at this point, it will be improved further.

* Though it's technically possible that PS3 charges fees for certain updates, they continue free updates as the basic concept of PS3 is a hardware that evolves with updates.

* Optical discs and media files (including DLNA) are played back through 2 different paths in PS3. Functions such as noise reduction are first implemented in the optical disc player, then some of them are applied to the media player. While an optical disc player only requires an implementation in the range of an official spec, a media player needs a different know-how or sometimes a new algorithm to support files authored by general users with varied encoding settings. The playback quality of AVCHD is currently higher when you open it from a disc or a memory stick than from a file in a folder.

* The main target of mosquito noise reduction is recordings from digital TV. It assumes a use case where a user plays a long MPEG-4 AVC file recorded on a BD. The upconversion in 1.80 was useless for a noisy movie, so noise reduction (not only the specific function of mosquito noise reduction, but also other filters) has been improved in 2.20.

* Though mosquito noise reduction is high on the processing load, the total load is lower than that of the first version of the PS3 BD player or 1.80. In 1.80, it was almost full load when upconverting a DVD, but not now due to optimization. Currently it doesn't reach full load unless it plays back 2 AVC streams in Picture-in-Picture while running high-load BD-Java.

* As for 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA, "please look forward to them."

* The LTH support took time since they had to test it with a LTH disc recorded with a Sony BD recorder.

* The update schedule is not different from before, basically a large update is once in a quarter. However the next update may be soon because of the PS Store.

* It's recommended to update a PS3 since BD titles with new encryption keys start to appear. Though 1.80 already has the latest key, image quality in the latest firmware is a lot better. An updater for PS3 is also contained in some movie titles. The Blu-ray version of Resident Evil 3 has a 2.10 updater.
