I was browsing some blog and someone talked about Ninja Gaiden and also gave the meaning "Gaiden- Side Story". So I kept thinking deep about this.
Ninja Gaiden- Ninja Side Story. In the Classic NG, it's all about Ryu. But why is the title called Ninja Gaiden (Side story)? It should mean that Ryu should be famous some place else and has his own game, that is why it's called Ninja Gaiden (Side Story). However Ryu has not been expanded yet into different games. I don't know the intention of actually calling it Ninja Gaiden, originally called Ryukenden in Japanese. I tried searching for the meaning of Kenden in Japanese but no luck. Now this brought me to my intention to make this topic. If Ninja Gaiden is a side story and Ryu IS from Dead or Alive officially and not a special character. Him having his game Ninja Gaiden SIDE STORY, should mean Ninja Side Story, basically his story. But think about this, how many ninjas are there in DOA? 4 ninjas who are Ayane, Kasumi, Ryu and Hayate. 2 ninjas and 2 kunochis. Just because the title states "Ninja" doesn't mean 1 person, the title Ninja could be cumulative of all ninjas in DOA bound as 1. So Ninja Gaiden can be the story of all the Ninjas from DOA, thus starting Ryu as the main character. Remember Resident Evil Gaiden/Side Story, Gundam Gaiden, Hokuto No Ken, Roah Gaiden. Basically Side Story tells a story of what happened before the main event of a story. So my point is, all the ninjas and kuniochis from DOA should all star in Ninja Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden is not Ryu's game alone! Ninja Gaiden is a name, doesn't contain Ryu's name or clan in the title Ninja Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden is a side story. Whose side story is it? Title doesn't say, it just says Ninja Side Story! So it could be ANYONE of DOA's Ninjas. Ninja Gaiden 3 can even star Hayate. Or am I talking Blasphemy?:P |

That's actually pretty crazy, I never realized Gaiden meant Side Story but here's something to think about:
If Ninja Gaiden does mean Side Story and not specific to one person, why was it that Itagaki made NG focal point for Ryu Hayabusa and throw Ayane in for fan service where as Hayashi thrown in Rachel and now Momiji in the Sigma series? Did Itagaki not know the origins of the word: 'Gaiden' and Hayashi did or is it just that NG was always meant to be a Ryu game regardless of the Gaiden meaning? idk whether they should add any more playable people in NG3. I've never really cared for most of the characters besides Ryu. |

good point
I don't know Itagaki's true intention of reviving Ninja Gaiden back to 21st century. He may have used Ryu in DOA to boost the characters slot, he wanted to use Tecmo's original IP just like how Capcom are using all new IP Characters for Marvel vs Capcom 3. Also he may have foreseen that Ninja Gaiden was popular but not popular enough. Remember there's a Ninja Gaiden OVA anime cartoon out already. I mean if a small franchise like Ninja Gaiden can get it's OWN anime show/movies, then it means Ninja Gaiden must be something big. The rival game towards Classic Ninja Gaiden back in the day was Shinobi. I never played both so I can't tell which was the better game, but SOMEHOW Ninja Gaiden emerged victorious because people preserved Ninja Gaiden more than Shinobi and worst yet, Ninja Gaiden had it's own anime show. Now in 21st Century, SEGA revived Shinobi on the PS2, what does that tell you? The rival battle is still going on, so Itagaki wanted to make Ninja Gaiden remake to battle Shinobi. Originally I'm sure Itagaki's intention was not to make Ninjas from DOA since DOA's character development and stories hasn't expanded yet. Though Ninja Gaiden was still dubbed as Ryu's game alone- Ryukenden. Reason for adding Ayane in Ninja Gaiden was to further expand DOA story and remember both share the same universe. Itagaki already said he wouldn't put Kasumi to a Ninja Gaiden game because she is too soft for a violent type of game, thus why Ayane suited the role. I wouldn't say Hayashi threw in Rachel, Rachel was an original character from NG, Hayashi just wanted to make her playable so this doesn't mean anything, it means Rachel too is an important original character in the NG universe. Momiji too is an original character from Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, Hayashi was the director of the game not Itagaki. I do not know who came up with the idea of adding Momiji, but since Hayashi was the head of the project, I'm sure that was his decision. I'm sure Itagaki knows what Gaiden means since it's a Japanese word that's why he created Ninja Gaiden which is living up to the name Gaiden-retelling/side story. Why is it living up to the name? because Ninja Gaiden revamp retold the whole story of Ryu by adding fiends, greater fiends, his father being alive etc
BUT REMEMBER! Nowadays we don't even recall Ninja Gaiden Ryukenden anymore, neither do the Japanese! Everyone refers RyuKenden to Ninja Gaiden since that's now the official name and original name! So Ninja Gaiden is a retelling of Ryu's story before he entered DOA or perceived ninja characters from DOA. It's still stupid man! If Ninja Gaiden is a retelling, it can still be based on all 4 ninjas, or Kasumi even being the star of Ninja Gaiden 3. Because in DOA, all ninjas share a strong relation and connection together, thus all belonging to a different clan. |

If they're going to add more characters in NG3, they better make them a character selection option in the beginning. I still prefer playing with Ryu over all 3 from Sigma 2.
